Rebranding HRT as Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT)

At WA Menopause Clinic, we use the most up-to-date terminology to reflect modern menopause care. What was once commonly referred to as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is now called Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT).

Why the Change?

The term “Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)” was originally used because menopause was viewed as a hormonal deficiency that needed to be replaced. However, we now understand that menopause is a natural life transition, not a disease—which is why the term Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT) is now preferred by leading medical organizations, including the Australasian Menopause Society (AMS) and the North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

MHT is used not to replace something missing, but to optimize health and well-being during and after menopause by treating symptoms and reducing long-term health risks like osteoporosis and heart disease.

What is MHT?

MHT involves the use of oestrogen, progesterone, and sometimes testosterone to help manage menopausal symptoms such as:

✔ Hot flushes & night sweats

✔ Sleep disturbances

✔ Mood changes & anxiety

✔ Joint pain & muscle aches

✔ Low libido & vaginal dryness

✔ Brain fog & difficulty concentrating

It is also proven to provide long-term health benefits, including:

✅ Strengthening bones & reducing osteoporosis risk

✅ Supporting heart health & lowering cholesterol

✅ Protecting brain function & reducing dementia risk

✅ Improving metabolic health & insulin sensitivity

Is MHT One-Size-Fits-All?

Absolutely not. Every woman’s journey is different, which is why MHT is highly individualized. The right type, dose, and delivery method (patch, gel, spray, tablet, or implant) will vary based on your symptoms, absorption, and overall health.
